When Your Symptoms Need a Specialist Opinion

Many gastrointestinal conditions develop gradually, or are first picked up on a routine scan, so it is easy to delay seeing a specialist. Waiting can sometimes make treatment more complex, particularly where cancer or a large hernia is involved.

If you are experiencing any of the following, a specialist evaluation is worth seeking:

  • Persistent abdominal pain or bloating
  • A lump or swelling in the abdomen or groin
  • A hernia that has returned after previous surgery
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Jaundice, or yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Blood in the stool, or a change in bowel habits
  • Difficulty swallowing or persistent indigestion
  • A gallbladder, liver, pancreatic or bowel finding on an ultrasound or CT scan
  • Bleeding, pain or a lump around the anus, such as piles, a fissure or a fistula
  • Struggling to manage weight alongside diabetes, high blood pressure or joint pain

Many of these symptoms have a straightforward, non-cancerous explanation. A timely specialist opinion helps identify the cause early and keeps every treatment option open.

Comprehensive, Personalised Surgical Care

No two GI cases are the same, and the right treatment for one patient may not be right for another.

Dr. Kapoor takes time to understand each patient's diagnosis, overall health and personal priorities before recommending a course of treatment, and explains the diagnosis, the options available and what to expect, so that patients and their families can make an informed decision together.

Whether treatment involves robotic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, open surgery or a combination of approaches, every recommendation is guided by clinical judgement first, with technology used to support the outcome rather than to define it.

Meet Dr. Abhimanyu Kapoor

Dr. Abhimanyu Kapoor is a Surgical Gastroenterologist based in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, with 15 years of experience in the diagnosis and surgical management of gastrointestinal disease.

He completed his MBBS at Government Medical College, Patiala, followed by an MS in Surgery from SMS Medical College, Jaipur, and an MCh in Surgical Gastroenterology from SGPGIMS, Lucknow, one of India's leading centres for gastrointestinal surgical training.

He is the Director and Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Regency Hospital, Kanpur, where he leads a dedicated GI surgery unit offering round the clock care, and also sees patients at Onyx Superspeciality Clinic. His practice spans the full range of gastrointestinal surgery, from routine laparoscopic procedures to complex cancer, hepatobiliary, bariatric and abdominal wall reconstruction cases, and he is regularly consulted on deteriorating cases that have been managed elsewhere.

Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery, Used With Purpose

Robotic and laparoscopic techniques can offer real advantages in selected gastrointestinal procedures, including smaller incisions, more precise access to difficult areas of the abdomen, and a shorter recovery for suitable patients.

Dr. Kapoor established Kanpur's first robotic GI surgery programme, and has since carried out robotic and laparoscopic procedures across cancer, HPB, bariatric and hernia surgery, including the region's first robotic and laparoscopic Whipple's procedure.

Not every patient or every condition is suited to a robotic or minimally invasive approach. Each case is assessed individually to determine which technique is likely to give the best outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

You should see a surgical gastroenterologist if you have a gastrointestinal cancer diagnosis, a gallbladder, liver or pancreatic finding on a scan, a hernia that has recurred after previous surgery, or persistent abdominal symptoms that have not been explained. Early specialist assessment usually keeps more treatment options open.

Robotic GI surgery uses robot-assisted instruments to give the surgeon greater precision and a more detailed view during minimally invasive procedures. It is not suitable for every patient or every condition. It is recommended only where it is genuinely likely to improve the outcome, based on the individual case.

Yes, in most cases. A recurrent or complex hernia usually needs a more detailed surgical plan than a first repair, including a careful look at why the earlier repair did not hold, but a durable outcome is achievable for most patients.

Yes. A second opinion from a specialist GI surgeon can help confirm the diagnosis, clarify whether the cancer is suitable for surgery, and outline treatment approaches such as robotic or laparoscopic surgery, before you commit to a treatment plan.

No. Bariatric surgery is also used to treat or improve weight-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and joint pain. Whether it is appropriate depends on an individual assessment of weight, health conditions and previous attempts at weight management.

The Rafaelo procedure is a radiofrequency treatment for piles that does not involve cutting. It is carried out as a day procedure and may suit patients looking for a less invasive alternative to conventional surgery, depending on the type and severity of their piles.
